    How letters join

    Letters change shape at the start, middle and end of a word. Learn the patterns and the six letters that never join forward.

    Where the sounds come from

    A practical first look at pronunciation: throat letters, heavy letters, and the pairs English speakers most often mix up.

    Short vowels: fatḥah, kasrah, ḍammah

    Three small marks give each letter its vowel sound. Learn them, then read your first real words.

    Tanwīn: the double vowels

    Doubled vowel marks add an n-sound at the end of a word. Learn the three forms and the silent alif that often comes with them.

    Long vowels: the letters of madd

    Alif, wāw and yāʼ stretch a vowel to two counts. Learn the three patterns and the small 'standing' marks in the mushaf.

    Sukūn: closing a syllable

    A small circle means the letter has no vowel. Learn to close syllables cleanly and read the soft letters wāw and yāʼ.

    Qalqalah: the echoing letters

    Five letters bounce slightly when they have a sukūn. Learn which ones, and how much echo is right.

    Shaddah: the doubled letter

    The shaddah doubles a letter. Learn to hold it properly, and the extra nasal sound on nūn and mīm.

    Hamzah and the joining alif

    Some alifs are always pronounced; others vanish when you join words. Learn to tell them apart and how to start on a joining alif.

    Sun and moon letters

    The lām of ال is sometimes said and sometimes swallowed. It depends on the next letter.
